Following an ancient path, Kit Carson Road leads out from historic Taos Plaza. It follows a route through Taos Canyon up into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, leading into an alpine valley connecting with roads leading to Cimarron and Las Vegas. It has been used by the native Indians, Spanish colonist, mountain men and by Missouri smugglers avoiding the Spanish and Mexican customs officials. |
| Kit Carson Road is part of the scenic "Enchanted Circle" leading from Taos on to Eagle Nest, Red River, Questa and then back to Taos. The historic home of mountain man, trail blazer and army scout, Kit Carson is in the first block east of Taos Plaza. It is now a popular museum open to the public. Here on the "Road" you will also find world famous galleries, restaurants, hotels and gift shops. |
